Dave Sitton, a former UA baseball player, longtime UA rugby coach and the voice of Arizona football and basketball on television, has died. Sitton also served as marketing director for The University of Arizona Cancer Center and was active in a number of local charities.
Several coaches and athletes will represent the UA Wildcats track and field program at the 2013 IAAF World Championships, which begins Saturday in Russia. The UA affiliates include head coach Fred Harvey, UA senior-to-be Alyssa Hasslen and former Wildcats Brigetta Barrett and Georganne Moline.
Members of the public got a first peak at the Lowell-Stevens Football Facility during an open house held over the weekend. More than 1,000 people attended the free event, purchasing more than 250 season tickets.
Several UA athletes have been named to the USA Women's Wheelchair Basketball Team. The athletes, all members of the UA's wheelchair team, will compete nationally and internationally, vying for a chance to compete in the 2016 Paralympic Games.
It's been a long road for UA student-athlete Carissa Crutchfield, one with plenty of bumps, including the deaths of two of her former coaches. But the Arizona women's basketball guard has overcome the challenges to thrive as a Wildcat.
Some of the UA's strongest student-athletes - high performers in their sports and in the classroom - have earned Pac-12 Post-Graduate Scholarships. Arizona's Brigetta Barrett, John Bonano, Megan Meyer and Austen Thompson have been awarded scholarships, with funding amounts in the thousands.
Several UA-affiliated swimmers have been named among the 50 women and men who will serve a members of the USA National Team in the FINA World Championships. They are Kevin Cordes, Christine Magnuson, Matt Grevers and Kevin Steel.
UA Olympic silver medalist high jumper Brigetta Barrett has been named the Pac-12 Conference Woman of the Year for the 2012-13 academic year. Barrett now is the conference's candidate for the NCAA Woman of the Year, presented annually to graduating student-athletes who have distinguished themselves throughout their collegiate careers in the areas of academic achievement, athletics excellence, community service and leadership.
Damon Stoudamire was the starting point guard on one of Arizona's Final Four teams, the only player in UA history to score 40 points or more on two separate occasions, and his total of 45 points in a game is No. 2 on the all-time list of points scored in a game at Arizona. Stoudamire is back at Arizona as the new men's basketball assistant coach.
