The heat is on a little earlier than usual this year but those of us who stay in Tucson throughout the summer know how to find something to do while keeping cool at the same time.

And when it comes to UA activities, there are lots of opportunities for learning, even though we're between the spring and fall semesters.

This month, you can polish your public-speaking skills, be water wise with your landscaping or attend the annual Staff Advisory Council Conference.

If you're looking for something more – a UA-based day camp for your children, perhaps – be sure to check out the UA Master Calendar.

UA Toastmasters Meetings | June 8, 15, 22, 29
This ongoing Human Resources-sponsored workshop happens year-round, and maybe you've already thought about checking it out. With the slower days of summer upon us, you might find now the perfect time. UA employees meet during lunch every Friday in the University Services Building to help each other improve their public speaking skills with the aim of growing as communicators and professionals.

WaterSmart Lectures | June 16, 23
With two lecture workshops offered each day on topics such as "Desert Rain Gardens," "Gray Water Rebate," "Rainwater Harvesting" and "Residential Drop irrigation," you're sure to learn how to gain or improve skills  in conserving water while keeping the flora and fauna alive around the outside of your house. Sponsored by the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences, these presentations take place at the Arizona Extension Garden Center on Campbell Avenue. Seating is limited, so prior registration is required.

2012 Staff Advisory Council Crossroads Conference | June 18
All classified staff are invited to this year's event, which has a theme of "wellness" and is being held at the J.W. Marriott Starr Pass resort. The $65 registration fee includes all conference materials, workshops, a continental breakfast and lunch. Keynote speakers include Cathy Nicholson, director of human resources at the Arizona Health Sciences Center, and Tannya Gaxiola, the Tucson Hispanic Chamber of Commerce 2011 Business Woman of the Year. There will be raffle prizes, and workshop topics include online fraud, healthy choices and stress-free ideas for work and home.
