The UA Center for Creative Photography has been named one of the best college art museums in the nation.
Departures, a magazine produced for exclusive members of American Express, named the UA center as one among the Top Ten College Art Museums.
The institutional museums "can take chances that non-academic museums often can’t,” Jill Hartz, president of the Association of Academic Museums and Galleries, said in the Departures article on the top 10 art museums.
"This makes us exciting places to see new things, find new connections. We’re in the community engagement business," said Hartz, also executive director of the Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art at the University of Oregon.
The UA center is the largest institution in the world devoted to documenting the history of modern North American photography.
"There are at least 700 institutions of higher learning in the United States that have art museums or galleries, so it is a special honor for us to be included in the Top Ten," Katharine Martinez, the center's director, noted in a newsletter this week.
The UA center is the holder of 4.5 million items. The center also draws researchers from around the world who study the photography, fine print pieces, transparencies, correspondences and other materials in its holdings.
Others that made the top 10 list include the Princeton University Art Museum, the art museums at Harvard University, the Allen Memorial Art Museum at Oberlin College and the Hammer Museum at the University of California, Los Angeles.
