UA Hosting TEDxTucson

A set of anonymous, large-format portraits that have appeared on the steps of the Student Union Memorial Center has prompted questions about their purpose and source.

It turns out the photos, which were installed Dec. 1 and 2, were created by Lewis Humphreys, executive director for TEDxTucson, and are tied to two events being held at the UA.

Humphreys is showing the work in conjunction with "Wonder of We," which includes an exhibition of 22 of the pieces currently on display at the Union Gallery, located in the Student Union Memorial Center, 1303 E. University Blvd.

The exhibition also coincides with "City Of Healing & Innovation," TEDxTucson's major annual event. Open to the public, the event will be held Dec. 8 beginning at 7 p.m. at Gallagher Theater, also at the Student Union. The $20 tickets are available for purchase online.

Art, ghosts, native seeds, divorce, religion and the cosmos are among the topics to be discussed during TEDxTucson, which the UA BookStores will be hosting this month. Guests slated to speak include:

  • George Ure of UrbanSurvival.com
  • Stuart Hameroff, director and co-founder of the UA's Center for Consciousness Studies
  • Canadian author Patricia Pearson, whose work has appeared in the New York Times
  • Ann Zabludoff, a UA astronomy professor
  • Congresswoman Gabrielle Gifford’s former aide Daniel Hernandez, Jr., a UA alumnus who serves on the Sunnyside Unified School District Governing Board
  • David Sbarra, a UA associate professor and director of clinical training in the psychology department

The full schedule is available online.

TEDxTucson is a volunteer-based nonprofit organization that works to bring TED talks to Tucson.

TED, also a nonprofit, began in 1984 as a conference bringing together people invested in technology, entertainment and design.
