Boyce Thompson Arboretum Lecture – 'Agriculture in Ancient Israel'

When:
Repeats every month on January, February on the third Saturday 2 times.
February 17, 2018 1:30pmJanuary 19, 2019 1:30pm

David Oberpriller guided popular "Plants of the Bible Lands" walks around the UA's Boyce Thompson Arboretum in Superior for more than a decade, pointing out plants mentioned in the Bible that can grow and thrive here in Arizona, and sharing anecdotes from scripture. But trouble walking has sidelined the popular tour guide, so David arranged something new, partially for visitors who are also unable to walk the main trail but would enjoy learning the subject of his tour.

Referencing ancient documents, archaeological finds and scripture, David hosts a lecture about agriculture in ancient Israel in the lecture room of BTA's historic Smith Building.

Describing the presentation, David says: "We’ll look at the context of agriculture in ancient Israel – including the geography of the land, the climate, and the agricultural calendar – and understand how these things influenced the way the people of the Bible lived and are reflected in the Bible. We’ll also discuss some of the tools and techniques used in farming, and the crops that were grown and harvested. For such a small land, the variety is surprising. And some of the techniques are still in use today."

Following the lecture, David may lead a short walk to showcase Bible plants that are in gardens near the Smith Building.

The lecture is included with admission: $12.50 for adults, $5 for children ages 5-12, free for children under 5. Free to arboretum members and Arizona State Parks pass-holders.
