Charlas Con Cafe Lecture Series – 'A Central American Wound: Remapping the U.S. Borderlands in Oscar Martinez’s "The Beast"'
The Center for Latin American Studies' Friday lecture series, "Charlas con Café," continues with guest speaker Maritza Cardenas, an assistant professor of English at the University of Arizona.
Cardenas will examine representations of "The Beast" by Central American cultural producers such as Oscar Martinez's nonfictional narrative "The Beast," as well as a parade float at the Central American Independence Parade. Cardenas argues that these articulations of "The Beast" are instrumental in the formation of a Central American disembodied wound; the notion that individuals from the geopolitical space of the isthmus are viewed as sharing a similar collective traumatic experience as transmigrants in Mexico.
As always, coffee and snacks will be served.
