UA Science Cafe at Saddlebrooke – 'Understanding Cancer: The Science Behind the Cures'

When: October 10, 2019 6:30pm

Presenter: Joyce Schroeder, Department Head and Professor, Molecular and Cellular Biology; Member, BIO5 Institute

About the talk: Cancer is the second most-common cause of death in the U.S. – yet progress is being made in understanding this disease and developing cures. We will discuss our understanding of the types, causes and drivers of cancer, with a focus on metastatic disease. We will then turn to some recent breakthroughs, including immunotherapy. Finally, we will discuss those cancers for which therapies do not work, and discuss new research underway that is designed to understand the causes of cancer resistance and relapse.

About Science Cafes: Science Cafes, presented by the UA College of Science, bring the community together with UA scientists and graduate students in a casual setting. You'll learn about the latest research being conducted, get to know the faces behind the science, and have opportunities to ask questions and deepen your understanding. We have five separate cafe series at five different locations around Tucson, each with their own themes for fascinating science discussions.
