CANCELED – Science Cafe at Magpies Gourmet Pizza – 'How to Heal the Desert: Strategies for Restoration'

When: April 21, 2020 6:00pm

Due to concerns about the new coronavirus, this event has been canceled.

Presenter: Elise Gornish, Cooperative Extension Specialist in Ecological Restoration, School of Natural Resources and the Environment

About the talk: In the Southwestern United States, the health of our deserts and arid lands has been degraded by decades of neglect. Climate change, land development, and invasive non-native plants continue to stress these habitats. However, we can change that trend by restoring native plant species that foster healthy habitats. This Science Cafe presentation will explore why restoration is important, show how to do it, and highlight some of the novel approaches to habitat rehabilitation that can be applied by a variety of stakeholders, from the backyard gardener to the thousand-acre land manager.

About Science Cafes: Science Cafes, presented by the University of Arizona College of Science, bring the community together with University of Arizona scientists and graduate students in a casual setting. You'll learn about the latest research being conducted, get to know the faces behind the science, and have opportunities to ask questions and deepen your understanding. We have five separate cafe series at five different locations around Tucson, each with their own themes for fascinating science discussions.
