Learning From Rafe Sagarin: A Tribute

Thursday, September 17, 2015 - 2:30pm

This public event will honor the life and work of Rafe Sagarin, a marine ecologist, author and program manager for the Biosphere 2 Ocean.

Speakers and artists will discuss topics and projects that Sagarin was passionate about, including ecology and oceans, natural/national security and art and education. A reception will follow.

Following the tribute is a film festival at The Loft Cinema. Beneath the Waves will include the short film, "An Ocean Under Glass," which explores Tucson's world-famous Biosphere 2 and its efforts to create a living model of the Gulf of California, an incredible sea that is intimately connected to the Sonoran Desert that surrounds Biosphere 2. Directed by Sagarin, Brice LeCarre and Ivan Nevares, the film also stars Sagarin.

The Beneath the Waves Film Festival is a nationally-touring program that aims to encourage, inspire, and educate scientists, advocates, and the general public to produce and promote engaging marine-issue documentaries. The festival showcases marine-themed short films from all over the world that can help create discussion and activism around the vital issue of ocean conservation. This special event will include 10 short films and a post-screening panel discussion featuring UA faculty and members of the Tucson community.
