Bycatch Opening Reception

When: February 09, 2017 5:00pm

In Bycatch, Eric Magrane, a geographer and poet, and Maria Johnson, a marine conservationist and artist, present an art-science exploration of the shrimp trawling fishery in Mexico's Gulf of California. Combining video, installation, illustration, and poetry based on their overnight field research aboard trawlers, Magrane and Johnson have created an exhibit that gives you a taste of what it feels like to be knee deep in this overwhelming bycatch on the deck of a boat.

The gallery also features a complimentary exhibition, "Coast Lines," curated by Creative Writing MFA students Dorian Rolston, Miranda Trimmier, and Joshua Riedel. "Coast Lines" explores ways of mapping distances to the coast, and features work from the Museum's permanent collection and the collection of the Center for Creative Photography.
