Rock-Drilling Competition

Friday, April 21, 2017 - 10:30am

At their annual rock-drilling competition, UA mining and geological engineering students will drill into a 20-ton rock outside UA's Old Main building for two minutes each to see how deep they can get. (Not many people know that's why there are so many holes in the big rock.) Jackleg drills weigh about 130 pounds, and it's a lot harder than it looks. Lucky winners get hosed down by their teammates or thrown into the Old Main fountain.
