The UA's Kathy Short notes an important recent research finding that apps and interactive e-books do not replace physical books in effectively connecting children to reading. Short, who will speak during a family literacy event on March 27, said books, a caring adult, time and attention remain critical tools for children to become literate.
UA linguistics professor Cecile McKee has been teaching a course designed to investigate what can be learned about linguistics and philosophy from films. Following the study of films such as "The King's Speech" and "Do the Right Thing," the next session will focus on "Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country" and extraterrestrial languages, like the one spoken by the Vulcans.
