The historic interpretation of the land-grant mission has placed the UA's sphere of impact squarely within state and, at times, national boundaries. The contemporary iteration indicates that the University's land-grant mission involves a global impact.
Both parents of UA graduate student and sports enthusiast Zachary S. Brooks gave him a kidney, first in 1999 and then in 2007. Brooks, a doctoral student in the UA's Second Language Acquisition and Teaching program, took nine medals at this year's Transplant Games, a multi-sport event for living donors and those who have endured life-saving transplant surgeries.

Mars Science Laboratory's Curiosity rover is scheduled to land on the Red Planet Aug. 5. In advance of the landing, Science Downtown is hosting a celebration event on Aug. 4 that is open to the UA and Tucson communities. It will include special guests, displays, tours and other activities.
