The Arizona Health Sciences Center suffered a tremendous and shocking loss today. Four fatal shootings occurred this morning at the College of Nursing.
(Tucson Police Department are investigating the incident and TPD officials believe one of those individuals is the perpetrator and that he died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. TPD officials will release more information as it is confirmed and becomes available.)
We express heartfelt sympathy to the family and friends of the victims. It is shocking to hear of these events and this something we never expect to happen. We also are extremely concerned about students and staff who were witnesses. Students are being offered crisis counseling and these services will continue to be offered as long as needed.
This is an isolated event. We have no reason to believe that there are any further dangers to students.
No students, other than the alleged perpetrator, were injured. Parents who have concerns about their children who are students in the College of Nursing or at the UA can call the UA Dean of Students Office at (520) 621-7059, or 626-1222 (after 3 p.m.) for information.
All classes were cancelled today at Arizona Health Sciences Center. Memorial arrangements will be announced later.
The College of Nursing has about 300 students. The Arizona Health Sciences Center also contains the UA Colleges of Medicine, Pharmacy and Public Health, and University Medical Center.
UMC will remain in "locked down" status at the direction of Tucson Police Department until further notice. Staff may come in and out of the building but we are asking the public to be patient until further notice.
Please call 694-8888 if you need to reschedule an appointment or need asistance with coping.
