AIC welcomes community artists into mentor program

March 30, 2000

Arizona International College (AIC) of the University of Arizona kicks off an innovative Arts Mentor program with a reception for Tucson artists, Friday, April 28, 6:30-9:00 PM in Room 106 of the International Arts Center, 516 N. Fifth Ave. All areas of the creative arts are of interest, including the visual arts, music, dance, theater and book arts.

"This is in keeping with our mission to merge theoretical and practical education, and to expand the borders of the college to involve the local community," said Kali Tal, professor ofhumanities at AIC.

Through this program, which will start in September, AIC faculty will create links between students, faculty, and artists in the Tucson community. Participating artists will receive a stipend to work in mentoring relationships with AIC students. A faculty advisor will oversee the mentorships, with a three-way contract formed between the mentor, faculty member and student to outline each participant's role.

AIC is a four-year liberal arts college of the University of Arizona. It is distinguished by its commitment to interdisciplinary and international study of the liberal arts in the belief that integrated knowledge and analytical skills are essential for understanding the world in which we live, and for leadership in creativity and problem solving.
