Clinical Trials Aim to Prevent Asthma in Children

April 3, 2000

The UA Respiratory Sciences Center was awarded $1.3 million to participate in a nationwide, interactive Pediatric Clinical Asthma Research Network that will evaluate current and novel therapies and management strategies for children with asthma.

The funding comes from the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute of the National Institutes of Health. Over the next five years, the main goal of the Network will be to develop therapies that can prevent asthma in susceptible children.

The study, which will include five other research institutions across the country, will establish and maintain centers that conduct multiple therapeutic trials for children with asthma. A coordinating center will gather data and support protocol development.

"The selection of the Respiratory Sciences Center as a participant in this network confirms the Center's status among research institutions that focus their study on asthma," said Dr. Fernando D. Martinez, director of the UA Respiratory Sciences Center and principal investigator for the study. "This landmark network will pioneer therapeutic trials and management strategies for children with asthma. Research publications will disseminate its findings to medical professionals throughout the world, and have lasting
impact on future treatments."

Co-investigators on the study are Dr. Wayne Morgan, and Dr. Theresa Guilbert, both of the UA Respiratory Sciences Center.
