There are probably few places better to learn about solar cooking than Tucson in June. So, local school kids are learning hands-on science lessons this week at a summer camp at Los Amigos School. The camp culminates tomorrow (Friday) with a solar cookout.

The camp is one of four this month in Tucson, sponsored by the National Science Foundation and a partnership between the University of Arizona and the Saguaro Girl Scout Council.

Girls in the SYSTEM (which includes boys in two camps) aims to improve science, technology, engineering and mathematics education for kids in grades 3-8, especially, say organizers, Mexican American, Native American and economically underprivileged groups in Southern Arizona. Activities for the camps were designed to respond to the local setting, and include parents, teachers and Girl Scout troop leaders.

The finale of each camp is a "big event" on the Friday each camp ends. Events include:

- a solar cooking demonstration on June 9, 11:30 a.m.-2 p.m. at Los Amigos School;

- an "air show" with a rocket launching and paper airplanes, June 16, noon - 2 p.m.;

- a crime lab on Wednesday, June 21, 9:30-10:30; and

- a regatta, Friday, June 23, noon-1:45 p.m.
