Dr. William A. Grana has been named head of the department of orthopedic surgery at the University of Arizona College of Medicine.

Grana brings 32 years experience in orthopedic surgery to the University of Arizona Health Sciences Center. A graduate of Harvard University Medical School, his experience includes academic medicine, research and private practice.

Prior to his appointment as head of orthopedic surgery at the UA, Grana was a clinical professor in the department of orthopedics and rehabilitation at the University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center in Oklahoma City. While there, also was the director of research for the department of orthopedics and rehabilitation and director of the fellowship program in orthopedic sports medicine. He was on the full-time faculty at
the University of Oklahoma until 1983 when he founded and served as president of a private practice, Oklahoma Orthopedics Inc.

Grana said expanding the breadth of the department and working to increase the size of the residency program will be among his priorities.

"This will enhance the flexibility and educational experience for resident-physicians and establish a sound financial basis for the department," Grana said. "This expansion is critical in a managed-care climate that has been a challenge for academic medical institutions."

Grana has served as a medical consultant for a variety of athletic organizations, including Oklahoma State University, the Texas Ranger's AAA baseball affiliate, the U.S. Olympic Committee 1985 Winter World University Games Team, the 1987 Pan American Games, and the 1988 Olympics in Seoul, South Korea.

Grana plans to move quickly in strengthening the relationship between orthopedic surgery and the UA Intercollegiate Athletics.

"Dr. Grana's diverse interests, commitment to academic excellence, and dedication to developing a clear goal of community service make him an ideal leader for the Department of Orthopedic Surgery," said Dr. James E. Dalen, vice president for health sciences and dean of the College of Medicine. "We are proud to announce his appointment."
