Phi Beta Kappa has announced that Chris Impey, University Distinguished Professor and professor of astronomy at The University of Arizona, is among its 13 visiting scholars for 2006-07.
Impey and other scholars will divide up and travel to some 100 colleges and universities with Phi Beta Kappa chapters. The two-day visits allow scholars to meet informally with undergraduates, participate in classroom lectures and seminars, and give a major address to the school's entire academic community.
The 50-year-old Visiting Scholars program is designed to enrich the intellectual atmosphere of schools and enable undergraduates to talk to distinguished academics in diverse disciplines.
Impey, who has been at the UA Steward Observatory and astronomy department since 1986, is noted for his optical and infrared studies of galaxies and has won several awards for teaching undergraduates.
