Hundreds of new University of Arizona students surged onto campus Aug. 16 and 17 as the residence hall officially opened Thursday.

Even though parents and students had to cope with the 100-plus degree temperatures, find their way around and wait in lines, there was a distinct air of excitement and smiles all the way around.

While UA staff volunteers assisted with the unloading and hauling of belongings into dorm rooms, parking and transportation employees directed traffic and assisted others on where to park.

Of course with all the unpacking that was happening all over campus, Debbie Hanson, project and environmental coordinator with Residence Life, and Erica Hansen, (far right) student recycling handler, had their hands full breaking down boxes.

Hanson said by breaking down the boxes and recycling as much as possible, much of the trash could be recycled instead of just filling up a landfill. She anticipates the recycling crew will handle 15-20 tons of material from the 20 UA residence halls in the next several days.
