Denzel "Denny'' Joseph Hawkins, an employee at the University of Arizona Facilities Management for 30 years, died Dec. 10. He was 57.

Hawkins was born Nov. 30, 1942 in Muncie, Indiana to Harry "Joe'' Joseph Hawkins and Geneva Mae Davis Hawkins. He moved to Tucson with his family in 1948 from Anderson, Ind.

He attended Catalina High School and Pima Community College.

He served in the United States Navy Seabees. While in the Navy he married his high school sweetheart Russellyn ''Rusty'' Lee Jost on July 3, 1962. After returning from the Navy he worked for the Mission Unit of Asarco.

Hawkins came to work at Facilities Management on Nov. 16, 1968 as an electrician. He progressed to Electric Shop supervisor, shop superintendent and construction project manager. He received the University of Arizona Award for Excellence, given for outstanding service, in 1988.

Hawkins was well know for supervising the unit's involvement during sports events and for his great concern for the University of Arizona. He left Facilities Management on Dec. 2, 1997, said Gloria E. Alvillar, assistant director for human resources, but his memory will be with us for years to come.

Preceded in death by his mother, Geneva Mae Davis Hawkins and his sister, Ramah Jean Koleas, he is survived by his wife, Russellyn; father, Harry Joseph Hawkins; sister, Linda Mason (Bill); children, Tammy Farnsworth (Gary), Denny Hawkins (Stephanie), Eddie Hawkins, Jerry Hawkins, George Hawkins (Dianabelle), Diane Spencer (Logan); grandchildren, Lynise, Amy, Natalie, Brittany, Gary, Denny, Clinton, Katlyn, and Kyle; aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews.

Services were held at the LDS Tucson Stake Center on Norton Avenue on Dec. 15.
