Michael Gottfredson accepts position at UC-Irvine

May 12, 2000

Michael R. Gottfredson, vice president for undergraduate education, announced May 12 that he has accepted the position of executive vice chancellor at the University of California at Irvine. He will begin his duties there this summer.

In a letter to the campus community, Gottfredson said, "The decision to leave Arizona and join UC-Irvine was extraordinarily difficult. On the one hand, the opportunity to return to California and to work in the University of California system is very attractive to me. So too is the prospect of working at an excellent research university that is experiencing very strong growth. Located in an environment that is highly supportive of the value of research universities to students and to the general public, UC-Irvine can look forward to significant new accomplishments in the years ahead. I look forward to the opportunity to assist in that development.

"On the other hand, leaving the University of Arizona is very, very hard to do. I have the highest possible regard for this University. The distinguished faculty, the outstanding student body, and the enormous contributions that this University makes to the quality of life in Arizona cannot be overstated. I have truly enjoyed every assignment at Arizona during the past 15 years."
