Nohema Fernández, has been named the interim head of the media arts department in the College of Fine Arts.

The media arts faculty selected Fernández, professor of music in the School of Music and Dance, to lead the department, working closely with the unit's executive committee, while a search for a permanent head takes place. She replaces Mary Beth Haralovich, who has elected to return to faculty status.

Fernández brings collaborative leadership experience to her role as interim head. She has been leading strategic planning in the School of Music and Dance as chair of the Faculty Advisory Committee and has led faculty affairs as Chair of the School's Promotion and Tenure Committee. She served as president of the national College of Music Society, 1995-97. She also served as chair of the Society's Committee on Cultural Diversity.

Fernández earned her doctor of musical arts degree from Stanford University and, as a pianist, is a distinguished national and international recitalist and symphony soloist. Her articles have been published in Piano Quarterly and Latin American Music Review, and she is the editor of "Toward the End of the Century: Cross-Cultural and Minority Perspective," published by the College Music Society.
