Ota Named Senior Associate to the President

June 22, 2000

Patti Ota has accepted the position as senior associate to the president.
She also will be appointed to the faculty in the management information systems department of the Eller College of Business and Public Administration as associate professor with tenure.

Ota has been with us for the past year on sabbatical from Lehigh University. Initially, UA President Peter Likins asked Ota help with the transition after the unexpected retirement of Terry Burke, former associate to the president. Burke retired in August.

At Lehigh, Ota served on the computer science faculty and variously as vice provost, dean of the College of Business and Economics, and interim provost. Ota has a doctorate in computer science from the University of Pennsylvania and a bachelor's degree in mathematics is from Cornell University.

Ota's responsibilities include being liaison with the Arizona Board of Regents and with the multitude of campus organizations that work with the president, including various committees or councils of the faculty and the student body, the Office of the Provost and Intercollegiate Athletics.

She will be a member of the President's Cabinet and the President's Council, preparing agendas for these groups, and she will be responsible for organizing recurring ceremonies such as Commencement, and for coordinating presidential relationships with other universities. She will represent the Office of the President as appropriate at internal and external events. Ota expects to continue an active faculty life, typically teaching one course per year.

Arizona Board of Regents Program Coordinator Carla Nunn, and Claudia D'Albini, program coordinator for the Ombuds Program, will report to Ota.

Ota and her team will work out of the seventh floor of the Administration Building.
