The University of Arizona Poetry Center presents a fall reading with Poetry Center Summer Resident Cody Walker on Aug. 25, at 6 p.m. at the Poetry Center. This event will kick off the Fall 2006 Visiting Poets and Writers Reading Series.

The Poetry Center is located at 1600 E. First Street (at Cherry Avenue) on the UA campus. This event is free and open to the public.

Cody Walker teaches English at the University of Washington and poetry as part of Seattle Arts and Lectures' Writers. He won the 2003 James Boatwright III Prize for Poetry from Shenandoah, and his work has appeared or is forthcoming in several publications. As the 2006 Poetry Center Summer Resident, Walker receives a stipend and four weeks in residence at Casa Libre en la Solana to work on his writing. Former winners include Lise Goett (winner of the Barnard Prize for "Waiting for the Paraclete"), Mark Wunderlich and Beth Ann Fennelly.

This year's judges, Boyer Rickel and Morgan Schuldt, selected Walker's poetry manuscript from more than 95 submissions in poetry, fiction, and nonfiction. Runners up included prose writers Anne Ray and Mary Volmer.

The Fall 2006 Visiting Poets and Writers Reading Series is supported by Friends of the Poetry Center, the College of Humanities; The University of Arizona Foundation; the National Endowment for the Arts; the Arizona Commission on the Arts through appropriations from the Arizona State Legislature; and Tucson Writers' Project through appropriations from the Friends of the Tucson-Pima Public Library.
