The University of Arizona Medical Center-University Campus has been ranked among the nation’s best hospitals for the care of older adults and as high-performing in 11 other medical specialties in U.S. News & World Report’s Best Hospitals list of 2012-13.

The University of Arizona Medical Center ranked No. 33 out of roughly 5,000 U.S. hospitals for geriatrics, which is the medical specialty associated with the care of older adults. Only hospitals ranked among the top 50 in one or more of 16 specialties measured by the magazine are considered "Best Hospitals.”

“The interprofessional team led by Dr. Mindy Fain is truly an exemplary program that looks at the total care of the older adult,” said Dr. Andreas Theodorou, chief medical officer of The University of Arizona Medical Center. Fain is the division chief for geriatrics, general internal medicine and palliative medicine, and co-director of the Arizona Center on Aging.

“We are excited to receive this national recognition of our expertise,” said Dr. Thomas Boyer, chair of the department of medicine in the UA College of Medicine. “The growing numbers of seniors in our community benefit from the excellent geriatric care we provide, and we look forward to expanding our capabilities further with an Acute Care of Elders Unit and Senior Emergency Room Programs in the coming year.”

In addition to ranking The University of Arizona Medical Center among the best hospitals in the nation in geriatrics, U.S. News & World Report rated The University of Arizona Medical Center as “high performing” in 11 medical specialties:

  • Cancer
  • Cardiology & Heart Surgery
  • Diabetes & Endocrinology
  • Ear, Nose & Throat
  • Gastroenterology
  • Gynecology
  • Nephrology
  • Neurology & Neurosurgery
  • Orthopaedics
  • Pulmonology
  • Urology

U.S. News has published the annual hospital rankings for the past 22 years. The University of Arizona Medical Center has been rated a Best Hospital for more than a decade. This year’s complete rankings and methodology are available on the U.S. News website.

The hospital rankings, said U.S. News Health Rankings editor Avery Comarow, are like a GPS-type aid to help steer patients to hospitals with strong skills in the procedures and medical conditions that present the biggest challenges. “All of these hospitals are the kinds of medical centers that should be on your list when you need the best care,” said Comarow. “They are where other hospitals send the toughest cases.”

The University of Arizona Medical Center opened in 1971 and is the primary teaching hospital of the UA colleges of medicine, nursing and pharmacy. It is the flagship hospital of The University of Arizona Health Network, the clinical enterprise that was formed in 2010 by the integration of University Medical Center and University Physicians Healthcare.

The UA Medical Center is affiliated with UA centers of excellence, including the Arizona Center on Aging, the UA Cancer Center, the Arizona Respiratory Center, the UA Sarver Heart Center and the UA Steele Children’s Research Center, among others. These centers of excellence are renowned for their academic, research and clinical activities and have played a key role in the hospital’s national reputation.

The rankings were published by U.S. News in collaboration with RTI International, a research organization based in Research Triangle Park, N.C. Highlights of the 2012-13 rankings will appear in the U.S. News Best Hospitals 2013 guidebook.
