The Community Planning and Design Workshop of the University of Arizona has issued a call for its year 2000 Request for Proposals (RFP) for Planning and Design Assistance. The RFP is intended for neighborhood organizations, small cities and towns, rural associations and non-profit organizations who seek assistance in community planning and design. Proposals are due on Tuesday, May 2.

The Community Planning and Design Workshop of the University of Arizona is a public service/community outreach arm of the College of Architecture, Planning and Landscape Architecture (CAPLA). Based in the Drachman Institute, the Workshop brings the skills and knowledge of CAPLA students, faculty and staff to communities in need throughout Tucson, Pima County and the State of Arizona. Financial support comes from both CAPLA and the College of Agriculture through the Cooperative Extension.

The Workshop has assisted many community projects over last 10 years. Projects assist communities and ensure that students meet their education goals. Because of their limited funds to support these projects, the Workshop asks that community groups bring some of their own funds to support project materials, supplies, reproduction, travel, etc.

The group's past projects include:

- An urban design to revitalize Safford, including landscaping and planning strategies to make the city's downtown district more pedestrian oriented and economically vital;

- a nearly completed report for the City of Tucson on residential zones for the Oracle Road area;

- developed land use and architectural standards for the south Kino boulevard area of Tucson, including the large number of vacant parcels there;

- working with the El Presidio Neighborhood Association in Tucson on infill development in that historically sensitive area;

- a neighborhood center for Balboa Heights in Tucson;

- a student-led study of neighborhood diversity in Tucson

- projects for such towns as Naco, Heber and Winslow.

For more information, including a complete list of past projects, and/or an application, please call Corky Poster, 520-623-1722, e-mail cposter@u.arizona.edu, or fax 520-623-1722.
