UA Engineering and Business Give Awards to Honor Technology Business Leaders

Michael R. Bonsignore, chairman and CEO of Honeywell International, has been named the 2000 Technology Executive of the Year.

Bonsignore will receive the award at the annual Technology & Management Awards Luncheon (TMAL) on Tuesday, Dec. 12, at the Arizona Biltmore Hotel in Phoenix, Ariz. He is one of five business leaders to be honored at the event, which is expected to draw more than 1,000 people from Arizona's business and engineering communities.

The University of Arizona Eller College of Business and Public Administration and the UA College of Engineering and Mines sponsor TMAL, which is now in its second year.

Four other executives also will be honored at TMAL for their entrepreneurial efforts and outstanding contributions to developing the nation's economy. They are:



  • John Leonis, retired chairman of the board for Litton Industries - College of Engineering and Mines Lifetime Achievement Award.

  • Norman P. McClelland, chairman and president of Shamrock Foods - Eller College Lifetime Achievement Award.

  • Raymond J. Oglethorpe, president of AOL Technologies America Online - College of Engineering and Mines Distinguished Service Award.

  • Mark Hoffman, chairman and CEO of Commerce One - Eller College Distinguished Service Award.



Michael R. Bonsignore joined Honeywell in 1969 and became CEO in 1993. Last December Honeywell merged with AlliedSignal and General Electric recently acquired these merged companies. Bonsignore will become a GE director and consultant when the acquisition is completed. He graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy in 1963 with a degree in electrical engineering and also did graduate work in ocean science and engineering at Texas A&M University.

John Leonis joined Litton Industries in 1959 and became president and CEO of the company in 1994. Litton Industries is a multi-billion-dollar electronics, defense and information systems company. He graduated from the University of Arizona in 1959 with a degree in electrical engineering.

Norman P. McClelland has been president of Shamrock Farms Co. since 1965, president of Shamrock Foods Co. since 1967 and chairman of Shamrock Foods Co. since 1993. He and his sister, Frances, contributed the leadership gift that funded UA's McClelland Hall, home of the Eller College. He also has served as chairman of the Eller College board of advisors and has been a long-time contributor to the Eller College. He graduated from the University of Arizona in 1949 with degrees in agriculture and business and received an honorary doctor of laws degree from UA in 1991.

Raymond J. Oglethorpe is a business and technology industry veteran of more than three decades. He leads America Online's Technologies organization. His responsibilities include many of the services provided directly to AOL's members worldwide. He joined America Online in 1994 and began his career in 1966 as a systems engineer with IBM. He graduated from the University of Arizona in 1966 with an electrical engineering degree and earned an MBA from George Washington University. He also has completed executive programs in finance, marketing and general management at the Wharton School and Harvard Business School.

Mark B. Hoffman founded Sybase, Inc. in 1984, a company whose annual revenues reached nearly $1 billion by 1996. More recently, he founded Commerce One, which includes the Global Trading Web™, the world's largest e-community for business-to-business trading. Commerce One offers technology and business services that allow companies trading through the Global Trading Web™ to work together. He graduated from West Point and earned an MBA from the University of Arizona in 1979.
