The Broadway Village merchants are having a fiesta and fundraiser for the University of Arizona department of history on Saturday, July 22 from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. The Broadway Village Shopping Plaza is located at the corner of Broadway and Country Club Roads.
The fiesta and fundraiser will celebrate the history and beauty of this historical site, the first shopping retail center in Arizona, built by Tucson pioneer John Murphey in 1939. He hired architect Josias T. Joesler to design the plans.
The plaza is a blend of Spanish, English and Indian traditions exclusive to Tucson. Classical guitarist Frederico and the Mariachi Ceilo de Mexico will provide music.
There will be a silent auction in the main plaza with items donated from the Broadway Village merchants. The proceeds from the auction and a percentage from the stores will be donated to the department of history's Undergraduate Scholarship Endowment Fund.
One of the oldest departments at the UA, this is the first undergraduate scholarship fund in its 103-year old history.
