UA hosts Math Awareness Week 2000 April 22-28

Math touches everyone, from making simple calculations at the grocery store to thinking about a space with 26 dimensions. The mathematics department at the University of Arizona will be offering insights into the discipline through a series of public events April 22-28. Those events include:

- Saturday, April 22 _ A conference for high school students to get a look at math at the university level from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. in MTL 123 (located on Lowell Street, immediately east of the Mathematics Building);

- Monday through Friday, April 24-28 _ An interactive public display featuring computer programs, geometric models, a 3-D tile display and actual mathematicians who can explain what is going on, 3-5 p.m. in Math 401N;

- Monday, April 24 _ Math Awareness Week reception and Spring Awards Ceremony, 4-5 p.m.;

- Tuesday, April 25 _ Keynote address (Cosmology and the Geometry of the Universe) by Vatican Observatory astronomer William Stoeger at 5:30 p.m.;

- Wednesday, April 26 _ Math Film Festival (The Shape of Space, Hypercube, etc.) at 4 p.m. in Family & Consumer Resources, Room 202;

- Thursday, April 27 _ Daughters on Campus activities, including an interactive math musical performed by the Tucson Symphony String Quartet at 1:15 p.m. in Math 401N;

- also on Thursday, math puzzles and games from 2-3 p.m. in Math 402; and

- Knots in Theory and in Reality: A Window into Mathematical Research, featuring professors Alain Goriely and David T. Gay;

- Plus, there will be a contest to see how many candy pieces are in the math department polyhedron
