UA Poetry Center announces 2000-2001 reading series

The Poetry Center at the University of Arizona in Tucson announces "Wide Open: Poetry in the Larger World," its visiting poets and writer reading series for 2000-2001. All events are free and, unless otherwise noted (and marked with an asterisk), begin at 8 p.m. in the Modern Languages Auditorium on the UA Campus.

These presentations are made possible in part by funding from The Academy of American Poets, the University of Arizona Foundation, Friends of the Poetry Center, and the Arizona Commission on the Arts through appropriations from the Arizona State Legislature and grants from the National Endowment for the Arts.

C.D. Wright
Reading: Wednesday, Sept. 13
*Colloquium: Thursday, Sept. 14, 11 a.m., "Swede" Johnson Bldg., 1111 N. Cherry Ave., Rm. 205
C.D. Wright was born and raised in the Ozark Mountains of Arkansas. She has published nine collections of poetry, most recently the book length poem "Deepstep Come Shining," "Tremble" and "Just Whistle. " In 1999 she received a Lannan Literary Award. She is also the recipient of a Poetry Center Book Award from San Francisco State University for "String Light," a National Endowment for the Arts fellowship in poetry, the Witter Bynner Prize for Poetry, a Guggenheim fellowship, a Bunting fellowship and a Whiting Writers Award. She teaches at Brown University in Providence, R.I.

Barbara Cully
Reading: Wednesday, Sept. 27
Barbara Cully is the author of "The New Intimacy," which won the National Poetry Series Open Competition, and "Shoreline Series." She has received fellowships from the Michel Karolyi Foundation and the Arizona Commission on the Arts and was awarded the Sonora Review Poetry Prize. Cully has taught at the University of Iowa and the Prague Summer Writers Workshop. She is currently a lecturer at the UA. She recently completed a new collection of poems, "Desire Reclining."

Elizabeth Evans
Reading: Wednesday, Oct. 4
Elizabeth Evans has received many grants and fellowships for her writing, including a National Endowment for the Arts fellowship, the James Michener Fellowship and fellowships at Yaddo and MacDowell. She is the author of "Carter Clay" and "The Blue Hour." Evans is a professor in the UA creative writing program.

Alberto Blanco
