Eddie Navarrete has been named associate vice president, marketing communications and brand management, for the University of Arizona. His appointment was announced Thursday by Teri Lucie Thompson, senior vice president for University Relations and chief marketing officer.

Navarrete is currently the interim director of National Field Marketing and Advertising at T-Mobile USA, and regional senior manager, Marketing and Advertising-Southwest, at T-Mobile USA.

"Our national search generated a pool of highly qualified candidates, but our search committee recognized that 'special something' in Eddie, who is an energetic authentic team player with a robust marketing background," Thompson noted.

"Eddie's service in a variety of categories will bring the experience and the innovative perspective we need to animate and creatively showcase the UA story, helping raise our profile and differentiate the University of Arizona from other fine institutions," she said. "He knows how to tailor marketing messages for different audiences and how to leverage new tactics and platforms to deliver a consistent UA message across all mediums to all audiences."

Navarrete will be responsible for all marketing functions, including digital and mobile. Using a data-driven approach, he will be responsible for shaping the overall strategic and creative direction of the University's branding, advertising, content development and digital and social media outreach – all of which serve to advance the University's strategic plan and business goals.

Also, Navarrete will provide leadership to and build collaboration with campus marketing and communication professionals, including colleges, schools, administrative units and others, to ensure an integrated and cohesive marketing strategy. Navarrete will work closely with his University Relations peers and UA Foundation partners on marketing outreach efforts to reach alumni, donors and other constituencies.

"I am excited to join the University Relations team and lead the UA's marketing efforts," Navarrete said. "What really drives me is the opportunity to engage our different audiences and bring to life all of the amazing qualities that make the UA such a tremendous institution."

Navarrete is a seasoned marketing professional with more than 15 years of consumer marketing and branding experience. Over the course of his career, he has led a number of innovative marketing campaigns. Most recently, he helped lead the National Field Marketing organization for T-Mobile USA, as well as the company's marketing and advertising initiatives for its fastest-growing and most profitable region. He also has served as director of multicultural marketing for Safeco Insurance; associate director of marketing and sales operations at Verizon Wireless; and strategic planning manager for Flextronics.

Navarrete is from south Seattle and received his undergraduate degree from Whitman College. His family lives in Chandler, Ariz.
