University of Arizona research support librarians serve as the primary resource for University researchers and students.
Their knowledge of the breath of research taking place on the UA campus has led to the creation of the University Libraries' Tuesday Talk Series at the Main Library.
The library is dedicating an hour each month to celebrate research and the discovery of knowledge with its Tuesday Talks beginning Tuesday, Sept. 8 from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m.
"There is wonderful, interesting research happening on the UA campus and at the Library and we wanted to provide an opportunity for those ideas to be showcased and to show how research can impact our everyday lives," said Maliaca Oxnam, UA associate librarian and a member of the team that came up with the idea for the Tuesday Talk series.
The series will be held each month, generally on the first Tuesday of the month and is open to the public.
Their goal also is to invite discourse, generate ideas and to inspire collaboration.
"As research support librarians, we are often aware of individual research interests throughout campus and can often connect researchers with others who are dedicating efforts to common or similar studies," Oxnam added.
The library team approached several UA faculty to assess their interest in participating in the series and has filled the speaker slots through December.
The team is seeking to fill their Tuesday Talks series through next year and is calling for submissions from UA student organizations, graduate students and UA faculty interested in speaking, performing or making multimedia presentations.
The fall lineup for the Tuesday Talk Series is as follows:
Jeff Stone associate professor of psychology: "White Men Can't Jump and You Throw Like a Girl! How the Impact of Stereotype Threatens Performance in Sports"
Roberto Cintli Rodriguez, research associate with the UA Mexican American Studies and Research Center: "The History of Red-Brown Journalism and Communications" (in recognition of Hispanic Heritage Month)
Ofelia Zepeda, Regents' Professor with the UA department of linguistics
Title: TBA (in recognition of National American Indian Heritage Month)
David Cuillier, assistant professor with the UA School of Journalism: "The Bill of Rights and the Freedom of Information Act"
The Tuesday Talk series will be held in the main floor of the library in the east lobby.
"We would love to increase the number of talks or presentations over time. Ultimately building upon people's interactions with one another and with other departments – we want this series to be sustainable and to grow," Oxnam added.
