War in the 21st Century
Peter Warren Singer, senior fellow and director of the Center for 21st Century Security and Intelligence at the Brookings Institution, will speak at the UA on Oct. 3 about the implications of robotics and other new technologies for war, politics, ethics and law in the 21st century.

Addressing the effects of new technologies in war, Peter Warren Singer, considered one of the world's leading experts on changes in 21st century warfare, will speak at the University of Arizona.

Senior fellow and director of the Center for 21st Century Security and Intelligence at the Brookings Institution, Singer will present his lecture, "Wired for War: Drones, Warfare & Politics in the 21st Century," Oct. 3 at 6:30 p.m.

The lecture, sponsored by the UA Confluencenter for Creative Inquiry, is free and open to the public, and will be held in the South Ballroom of the Student Union Memorial Center. The event is co-sponsored by the UA Office of Federal Relations, the College of Engineering, College of Social and Behavioral Sciences and the School of Government and Public Policy.

During his talk, Singer will speak about the implications of robotics and other new technologies for war, politics, ethics and law in the 21st century.

Singer's most recent book, "Wired for War," was described as "awesome" by Jon Stewart of the "Daily Show" and made the New York Times non-fiction bestseller list in its first week of release and was named a non-fiction Book of the Year by The Financial Times. Additionally, the book has been made an official reading of the National Defense University, U.S. Air Force, U.S. Navy, U.S. Army and the Royal Australian Navy.

Singer boasts a broad range of awards and acknowledgements.

He has been named by CNN to their "New Guard" List of the Next Generation of Newsmakers, by the Smithsonian Institution-National Portrait Gallery as one of the 100 "leading innovators in the nation," by the Turner Broadcasting series "26 People to Save the World," by Defense News as one of the 100 most influential people in defense issues and by Foreign Policy Magazine to their Top 100 Global Thinkers List, of the people whose ideas most influenced the world that year.

Also, Singer has received awards and support from the Tribeca Film Institute, Sloan Filmmakers Fund, Film Independent and FAST Track at the L.A. Film Festival.

In his personal capacity, Singer served as coordinator of the Obama-08 campaign’s defense policy task force. He has also worked as a consultant for the U.S. Department of Defense and the FBI. He also has advised a host of entertainment programs, including for Warner Brothers, Dreamworks, Universal, HBO and the video game series, Call of Duty.
