Workers' compensation rights

March 8, 2000

Any time a UA employee is injured on the job, that individual should report it immediately to their supervisor, who then should report it to Risk Management. State law requires that supervisors document any illness or injury that may be work related.

Workers' compensation, a statutory right of employees, covers employees from the time they arrive on University premises to the time they leave the premises, including breaks and lunch. Those on travel status, including field research, may be covered from the time they leave their house until they return.

Covered medical conditions that stem from University employment and manifest signs after working hours can be accepted or denied by the University's insurance carrier based on medical facts.

Supervisors, in turn, are instructed that they are not allowed, either verbally or in writing, to inform an employee that an incident is not covered by Workers' Compensation.
