The Arizona Board of Regents welcomes University of Arizona sophomore Valerie Hanna as the new student regent, appointed this week by Gov. Jan Brewer.
Slated to graduate in 2015, Hanna is pursuing a bachelor's degree in political science with a focus on public policy and law. She is an active member of student government, serving as an elected member of the Associated Students of the University of Arizona. She also has been an Arizona Ambassador at UA for the past year.

As outreach chairwoman for the UA Freshman Class Council, Hanna focused on projects to enhance the first-year experience and improve student retention rates.
"We are very pleased to welcome Ms. Hanna to the board and look forward to the unique and valuable perspective she will bring to the board," said ABOR Chairman Rick Myers. "Student regents have a significant responsibility of representing the more than 130,000 students currently enrolled in the Arizona University System. The student voice is a critical component of the board's leadership and one we value and respect tremendously."
The board did not have student regents until 1978 when the Arizona Students' Association proposed the idea. The two-year position, appointed by the governor and approved by the Arizona State Senate, is available to any full-time undergraduate or graduate student through an application process.
"Valerie's strong leadership record, and her keen interest in higher education, particularly in the area of outreach and improving student retention, will be most helpful to the board in its efforts to advance the number of baccalaureate degree holders in the state," Myers said.
Pending approval by the senate, Hanna will begin her term July 1. Her first year will be served as a non-voting member, and her second year will be as a voting member of the board. The governor appoints eight people in staggered six-year terms to the board plus two student regents who serve staggered two-year terms. Student Regent Tyler Bowyer will complete his two-year term on June 30.
