Dr. Steve Goldschmid, a noted gastroenterologist and medical administrator who has served as interim dean at The University of Arizona College of Medicine Tucson campus since July 2008, has been appointed dean of the College of Medicine's Tucson campus, effective immediately.
The appointment was made by Dr. William M. Crist, UA vice president for health affairs.
Prior to appointment as interim dean, Dr. Goldschmid served as chairman of the UA department of medicine since October 2006.
Board-certified in internal medicine and gastroenterology, Goldschmid joined the UA College of Medicine in 2000 when he was recruited to establish a state-of-the art gastroenterology service/endoscopy lab.
Before joining the UA, he served as director of clinical services at Emory University School of Medicine in Atlanta, Ga.
An accomplished clinician-investigator, Goldschmid has a special interest in inflammatory bowel disease and endoscopic therapy of gastrointestinal disorders.
After earning his medical degree from Wayne State University, Goldschmid completed his residency in gastroenterology at the University of South Florida College of Medicine.
A fellow of the American College of Gastroenterology and American College of Physicians, he also is a member of the American Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy and the American Gastroenterological Association.
"I am honored to serve as dean at the UA College of Medicine Tucson campus," Goldschmid said. "My vision is to continue to build a culture and work ethic that energizes the faculty and strengthens the teaching, research and clinical missions of the college. The University and the College of Medicine have a foundation for excellence already in place; the challenge will be to maintain a positive trajectory in today's changing economic and political environment. However, challenges often create opportunities, and I am ready to continue to move the college forward."
Crist said, "Dr. Steve Goldschmid has done a superb job during his tenure as interim dean, and we're very pleased he has agreed to serve as dean of the College of Medicine in Tucson. Now, with our College of Medicine dean position filled in Tucson, a complete leadership team is in place at the colleges at the Arizona Health Sciences Center. With this skilled group of leaders, we are poised to expand our efforts to address the health education, patient care, research and service needs of the residents of Arizona."
