Young-Jun Son has won the highest honor that the Institute of Industrial Engineers (IIE) awards to young university researchers.
Son, an assistant professor in Systems and Industrial Engineering (SIE), received IIE's Outstanding Young Industrial Engineer Award on May 15 at the 2005 IIE Industrial Engineering Research Conference in Atlanta, Ga.
IIE, which has 15,000 members worldwide, grants the award to only one person each year. Another Young Industrial Engineer Award is given annually to a young engineer working in industry.
Son received the award "in recognition of exhibiting outstanding characteristics in leadership, professionalism and potential in the field of industrial engineering in education."
He also received the Best Paper Award in the area of Modeling and Simulation at the conference. Modeling and Simulation is one of eight areas in which best-paper awards were given and a total of about 500 papers were presented in all categories at the conference.
The paper, "Development and Benchmarking of an Epoch Time Synchronization Method for Distributed Simulation," included six other authors. They are Richard Wysk, a visiting professor from Penn State, and five SIE students: master's students Adityavijay Rathore and Balaji Balaraman, and Ph.D. students Xiaobing Zhao, Seung Hyun Baek, and Jayendran Venkateswaran.
The research leading to this paper began as a class project in SIE 631 during fall 2004 and was expanded and pursed further following the class.
In 2004, Son was one of 13 researchers to receive the M. Eugene Merchant Outstanding Young Manufacturing Engineer Award from the Society of Manufacturing Engineers.
Son is an associate editor of the "International Journal of Modeling and Simulation" and of the "International Journal of Simulation and Process Modeling." In 2007, he and Wysk will be the program co-chairs for the IIE Industrial Engineering Research Conference, which will be held in Nashville, Tenn.
Son came to UA in 2000 after earning his Ph.D. degree at Penn State. He is the author or co-author of 50 publications that have appeared in refereed journals or been presented at conferences. He works primarily in the areas of manufacturing systems, simulation, software engineering and distributed computing.
