The University of Arizona maintained its status as one of the nation's top higher-education institutions in the annual U.S. News & World Report rankings.
The UA ranked No. 124 out of 310 national universities and No. 60 among public universities in the publication's "Best Colleges 2017" guide, released Tuesday. The UA remains the top-ranked college in the state of Arizona.
The management information systems program in the UA's Eller College of Management ranked No. 1 in public universities. Overall, it moved up one place from last year's rankings to No. 3, trailing only the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Carnegie Mellon University.
The Eller College cracked the top 20 in the Best Business Programs category for the first time since 2007, placing 19th (10th among public institutions). The college ranked 22nd overall the previous year. The McGuire Center for Entrepreneurship also scored a top-10 finish, placing seventh overall.
The UA College of Engineering undergraduate program moved up one spot to No. 50 nationally among doctoral degree-granting universities, finishing 28th among public institutions.
The UA also moved into the top 100 with high school counselors, coming in at No. 98 in their rankings.
U.S. News & World Report ranks colleges and universities based on a number of variables. The quality measures considered for national universities include graduation and retention rates, assessment by peers and counselors, faculty resources (such as class size, benefits and salaries), student selectivity, financial resources for students, alumni giving and graduation rate performance, which is the difference between actual and predicted graduation rates.
It should be noted that not all academic programs are ranked annually by U.S. News & World Report and are ranked only periodically. All of the above rankings, however, are newly released. At other times during the year, U.S. News & World Report releases rankings of best online programs, best global universities and top graduate programs.
