Arizona football head coach Rich Rodriguez officially opened his first season this week, leading the Wildcats by conducting the team's initial workout of the 2012 campaign on Aug. 2 at Jerry Kindall Field at Frank Sancet Stadium.
Arizona will follow Thursday's practice, which was conducted in shorts and helmets, with single-session workouts through Aug. 8 before opening the first two-a-day session on Aug. 9.
"I think most of the guys were in pretty good shape, and I think it showed," Rodriguez said. "It's a night and day difference certainly from our first practice in the spring to the first practice now. Our execution wasn't there, but I liked our enthusiasm, and I liked the way we moved around."
The Wildcats are slated to put on shoulder pads for the first time on Aug. 4 before following with full gear next week. Arizona's preseason practice schedule closes with a Meet The Team event on Aug. 19.
Thursday started with team and individual meetings before the season opening two-hour practice got under way.
"I met with seniors as a group yesterday and asked them to take leadership of this team," Rodriguez added. "I saw that today and they did a great job of teaching the freshmen what to do and keeping them engaged in practice."
The Wildcats will take to Arizona Stadium on Sept. 1 to host Toledo. The 7:30 p.m. contest will be broadcast nationally on ESPNU.
